Before focusing on parallel helical types, it's essential to understand why gearboxes are even necessary in a gantry crane. The electric motors that drive the crane's various motions (hoisting, trolley travel, and bridge travel) often operate at high speeds and low torque.
However, the lifting and moving of heavy loads require precisely the opposite: low speeds and high torque. Gearboxes act as intermediaries, converting the high-speed, low-torque input from the motor into a lower-speed, higher-torque output suitable for driving the massive winches and wheels of the crane.
Without a gearbox, the crane would be incapable of lifting or moving heavy objects. The motor would simply spin rapidly without providing the necessary force. The gearbox, therefore, is an essential component in the crane’s power transmission system and a critical determinant of its performance and safety.
